Tip of the Month

Back to archive list.

Die Inside, Smile Outside

Scenario: You know a person has a great capacity to give. Knowing this, you ask for a significant gift. They consider your request and end up giving a gift much lower than you asked or expected.

How do you react?

From my personal experience I can say two things occur.

You die inside

You smile outside

You have no choice but to graciously accept their gift and thank them for their help. Remember your goal is to bring them to a decision. You have done that. Thank them and thank the Lord while you continue to update them on your ministry and look for opportunities down the road to elevate their giving.

People Raising - A Practical Guide to Raising Support by Bill Dillon
"If there is a bogeyman in the missionary candidate's closet, it is likely the prospect of raising his own support too often seen as begging for money... The seasoned missionary, candidate or entire candidate school will profit from reading and studying this book."

John H. Orme
Former Executive Director, IFMA
